Drugs limiting excess mucus could save lives

Respiratory conditions that restrict breathing such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are common killers worldwide. But no effective treatments exist to address the major cause of death in these conditions — excess mucus production. Now, WUSTL researchers have described the molecular pathway responsible for excess mucus in airway cells and have designed a series of new drugs that inhibit that pathway.

Two WUSTL students are Rhodes finalists

Two Arts & Sciences seniors were among 212 U.S. finalists for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. They are Madeleine Daepp, an economics and mathematics student with an interest in agricultural policy, and Jeremy Pivor, an environmental biology major with a passion for ocean conservation.

Dance Theatre: Rootedness, Mobility and Migration

Mary Lou’s Mass is like a prayer on stage: a spirited homily rooted in the Southern church, an uplifting sermon on life’s trials and ecstasies. On Nov. 30-Dec. 2, students from the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences will perform excerpts from this groundbreaking collaboration between choreographer Alvin Ailey and jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams as part of Rootedness, Mobility and Migration, the 2012 Washington University Dance Theatre concert.

Men’s basketball wins three, improves to 5-0

The men’s basketball team improved its overall record to 5-0 with three victories. The Bears posted an 85-62 victory over Fontbonne University Tuesday at home, and then posted a pair of wins over Austin College (94-63) and Simpson College (71-66) Friday and Saturday at the Snyder Classic in Lincoln, Neb.
